Fairwinds Technologies was founded in 2016 when a group of leaders from the DoD and commercial technology arena decided to fuse those backgrounds and work together to design and deliver the latest technologies to the military.

As one of those founders, CEO Jim Sprungle has focused on careful and deliberate growth; building the company, guiding the offerings and aligning strategy to best serve the military and federal customer. With just under 40 employees, Fairwinds remains a small business - and Jim appreciates the inherent flexibility and benefits of such.

Headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland with engineering offices in Melbourne, Florida, Fairwinds Technologies offers innovative radio frequency technology development and systems integration along with managed, professional and technical services. As one of the systems integrator providers of satellite communications terminals for the Army, Fairwinds as part of the DISA Micro VSAT Program, has been honored to serve the warfighter.

Fairwinds Technologies moves beyond the traditional integrator role to also design and develop products in-house. In March of 2023, the company launched its very first product, a significant advancement in ground technology. Global Link is the first product from multiple internally developed signal processing advancements that provides a multi-modem antenna management system which allows U.S. Army personnel to route any modem to any antenna as well as quickly add or change modems and antennas. With the plethora of communications options available, Global Link enables warfighters to use the ground equipment, frequencies and satellites that are available in the moment.

This product provides several benefits, including increased terminal processing, high availability and SWaP-C benefits realized from reduced bandwidth costs and the sustainment of fewer terminals. This technology also provides the ability to combine multiple antennas to enable them to increase performance and act as a single distributed antenna system. Fairwinds works continuously to grow and adapt Global Link to meet the needs of the U.S. Army. This includes a current Army research and development contract to enhance the offering for Comms-on-the Move scenarios, especially for armored vehicles.

Throughout its history, Fairwinds Technologies has been awarded several prime contracts to include Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS), Global Tactical Advanced Communication Systems (GTACS) II, NASA SEWP V and most recently, the DLA C5ISR Gateway to Sustainment (G2S).

From the beginning, Fairwinds Technologies has recognized the importance of strategic partnerships, working with companies such as L3Harris, General Dynamics, Airbus, Comtech, Cyberlux, AST SpaceMobile, Ball Aerospace, Anokiwave, Cambium Networks, Pacific Star Communications, DataPath, Echelon Services, Tampa Microwave and Domo Tactical Communications (DTC) to provide engineering services, value-added resale and System of Systems Integration. Recently, the company announced an agreement to work with Comtech to supply their Troposcatter Family of Systems (FoS) to the U.S. Army.

Earlier this year, the company announced that it has teamed with AST SpaceMobile who is building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by standard mobile phones. Together, the two companies are exploring potential opportunities to jointly market AST SpaceMobile’s planned services and satellite technologies to the military market.

The future looks bright for Fairwinds Technologies as it heads into its second AUSA Annual Meeting next month. The show provides an excellent opportunity to meet with partners and suppliers, but most importantly, connect with its end user, the U.S. Army.
